I’m now 72 and have climbed it maybe 8 times in past 10 years and doing it again 19th August with HLI annual men’s day of reparation✅

I did it in April 2018 to do the 40 days and nights Adoration in the chapel and that was really tough as we had to bring up food/water with horrible windy wet weather. Spent 24 hours in the chapel in the most horrible weather.

Only did it on reek Sunday once.

Most people doing it now are not doing it for spiritual reasons. But hopefully God wi touch their hearts because everyone needs God🙏

What's HLI Paddy?

Never knew there was 24 hour Adoration. Overnight is hard-core!! Seems like I need to visit you with the microphone!

Human Life International is based in Knock and the Irish boss is Patrick McCrystal. They are the only Catholic Pro Life group and they are also behind the Men’s Public Rosary’s on the 1st Saturday of the month around Ireland. They also run Ask Majella a pregnancy advisory counselling service.

When I did the 24 hour it was organised by a different group and they had these in different monasteries like the Servites in NI and Silverstream.

I have written a booklet now on its 2nd edition called Man has forgotten God and if anyone sends me their address I’ll post it to them- paddyearly@gmail.com. I also have a You Tube channel a bit inactive recently.

I have also written articles for Catholic Voice.

Wonderful Louise! The mic must have been soaking - a blessed first excursion. 'They were a better generation' - Padraic's words speak volumes. What kind of generation have we become?

Revealing interviews, Louise. Nice cross-section of people. Audio-only works really well. Reminds me of our radio-days. No distraction, total focus on what is being said. Welcome relief from a noisy world. I can clean the kitchen at the same time. A new trend-setter?

Loved the 'Ag Criost An Siol' background. One of my favourites.

I just saw this British Pathé outsider view from the year of my birth. We have definitely lost something. But people will seek again and find. in spite of the dwindling numbers, something tells me that Reek Sunday's heyday will come round again. And we'll all be the better for it.

Omg RVJ I absolutely love that newsreel clip! See how so many went up in their finery! And the rocks all moving under their feet. That's how I remember it yrs ago. Fun fact: I did my college dissertation on those Pathe newsreels. The narrator is hilarious. Thanks for the laughs this morning. Tell me more about your radio days? I prefer audio only too...

Radio days...purely as a listener, but I listened to everything from Radio Eireann to BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, American Forces Network, Radio Moscow and the most essential of all, Radio Luxemburg, to mention just a few. I did a few inadvertent transmissions myself when fiddling around with electronics in my teens. I had an audience reach of about 1 (myself) in the immediate vicinity. It played havoc with our TV.

Funny coincidence about your college dissertation. Yes, there is something hilarious about those British Pathé newsreels with their stylised, clipped commentaries. And, of course, there was no little propaganda, subtle and all as it was, especially in the War Years. Yet, for all of that, there is a context to be had there that is often hard for people to see looking back. I always had and still have a soft spot for that old British Reserve. But, whatever you do, don't tell anyone or life won't be worth living.

Here's an even funnier outside view of Ireland from British Pathé in 1935. Just click on the newsreel link. I used to help my uncle Christy out with his blog at the time. He's still with us but no longer an active blogger:

A Great read Louise especially as I had 'chickened out' owing to the adverse weather! I felt relieved that you took your fellow pilgrims advice- and replaced your footware! Me thinks that the HSE have suspended house calls to 'Mountainy' parts of Mayo and the Helicopter service has has its limitations .
